John Edwards: Former Politician and Lawyer

Early Life and Career

Johnny Reid Edwards I was born on June 10, 1953, in Seneca, South Carolina. He graduated from Clemson University and the University of South Carolina School of Law. Before entering politics, Edwards was a successful personal injury lawyer.

Political Career

Edwards began his political career in 1998 when he was elected to the United States Senate as a Democrat. He served in the Senate until 2005. In 2004, he was chosen as the vice presidential running mate of Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry. The Kerry-Edwards ticket ultimately lost to the Republican ticket of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney.

Unsuccessful Presidential Runs

Following his vice presidential campaign, Edwards ran for president in 2008 and 2012. However, he was unsuccessful in both attempts, failing to secure the Democratic nomination either time.

Legal Troubles

In 2012, Edwards was indicted on charges related to an extramarital affair and the use of campaign funds to cover it up. He was found not guilty of the most serious charges but was convicted of one misdemeanor count of violating campaign finance laws. Edwards appealed the conviction, and the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals overturned it.

Post-Political Career

After his legal troubles, Edwards returned to practicing law. He has also remained active in political commentary, often criticizing the Republican Party.
