Australian Natural Gas Prices Rise Slightly in the First Quarter of 2024

WEB YTD data for Australian natural gas prices is current as of January 1, 2024. Financial year average prices are available for the Victorian gas market, including the STTM hubs in Adelaide, Brisbane, and Sydney, as well as the Wallumbilla Gas Supply Hub (GSH) at SEQ and WAL trading locations.
Natural gas prices in Australia averaged 1038GJ in Victoria and 1123GJ in Adelaide during the first quarter of 2024. These prices are slightly higher than the preceding quarter, driven by increased demand from the industrial sector and higher LNG exports.
The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) is currently investigating the market suspension and directions issued in relation to the administration of compensation pricing. These measures were implemented in response to the significant price increases experienced in the Australian gas market in 2023.
The global natural gas price is currently 0.086 US dollars per kWh for households and 0.072 US dollars per kWh for commercial customers. This is lower than the Australian price of 0.097 US dollars per kWh for households and 0.0000 US dollars per kWh for commercial customers.
